I wasn't expecting to like this figure nearly as much as I do. When the New Etheria Despara was revealed last year, I was lukewarm. I really enjoyed the idea of Despara (because I always thought it was lame that Force Captain Adora looked identical to Great Rebellion Adora). But I was very happy with the Classics and Origins figures we already had. The last thing I needed was a reinterpretation of a reinterpretation (especially when there are so many classic Etherian characters not represented in the line yet). But when I got this figure in-hand and saw and all its versatility, I fell in love. The funny thing is, my least favorite part of the figure is the actual Despara Hordak mask. It looks cheap and doesn't look like Hordak (despite technically being very similar). But on the bright side, there is a great Force Captain Adora look (at least that's how I'm referring to it) with a bat-winged headpiece, as well as a full Adora look. Her hair is a little flat, and her expression is a little vacant, but I'm still obsessed. Let's check her out!
Despara comes with four main display options (and a million variations if you want to get creative). She has two heads: Long Hair with Normal Eyes, and Short Hair with Red Eyes. Then the Short-Haired head can also wear two different accessories: a metallic winged half-helmet, and a "Hordak" mask (stylized to look like a Samurai Oni mask).
Aside from her heads and head-gear, Despara also comes with four hands, two swords, a horde armband,
removable chest/shoulder armor (with cape attached), and a removable armored skirt.
Full disclosure: I really dislike the Oni Hordak mask. It's too stylized and culturally specific for me. It reminds me of the 200x Sorceress who suddenly had an Ancient Egypt motif. These are supposed to be characters raised on far-away planets with their own cultural references, not Earth's (I know this distinction is ignored constantly in MOTU lore, but still). Plus there is a New Etheria Hordak figure already and his head does not look like this. The mask is also super bright white (a few shades whiter than her arms) and it washes out in photos.
Her swords can also be held in two loops on her back.
The hilts are very visible when you store them like this, though.
Time for some Group and Comparison Pic!
Here is the New Etheria Journey of Adora: Despara/Force Captain Adora, Adora, and She-Ra.
(My She-Ra has slightly modified face paint: I have her fuller lips and bigger pupils).
Cheers!
