Two cinematic scenes from my childhood scarred me for years. The first was an episode of Benson where Haley's Comet flew overhead and all the humans were reduced to gravel (or dried beans?). For a lighthearted sitcom this caught me off-guard and terrified me. The second trauma was the earthquake scene from Superman (1978) when Lois Lane's car slipped into a wide fissure and she died while suffocating under the weight of the crushing gravel and dirt. It was horrible. And I swear this played on TV every few months throughout my childhood. Lois wears several very similar outfits throughout the movie, but the 3-piece pantsuit with blue collar is unique to this horrible scene. If you've seen the movie, you know it ends happily (in the most illogical way possible), but I'm still a bit triggered. Spin Master is making some pretty great DC retro cinematic figures. I only hope they're able to sneak out the rumored Helen Slater Supergirl before the licenses shift. Let's check out Lois Lane below!

DC Direct Maquette - LOIS LANE!

I am very selective with my statue purchases. For reasons of limited display space and high price points, I simply can't purchase all the statues that catch my eye. This Lois Lane from the DC Direct Classic Animation Maquettes line was my forth statue purchase ever (not counting mini-busts). And interestingly, the BTAS Catwoman and Harley Quinn from the same line were my first and second purchases. I just love a classically-posed character in an iconic design. Lois Lane has had a lot of different looks over the years, but this 1940's brown skirtsuit will always be my favorite. I remember getting this maquette years after her release for a very discounted price of 20 bucks because of a few easy-to-fix scuffs. She's been a focal point of my collection ever since. Which is unique because I rarely buy non-costumed characters. But my love for classic animation gave her a pass. And there is almost no animation quite as "classic" as the 1941 Superman theatrical shorts from Fleischer Studios. Let's check out Lois below!

DC Direct Silver Age - LOIS LANE!

When I first started collecting action figures as an adult in the early 2000s, it coincided with me starting to collect comics again after a 5 year hiatus. I was in a new city with several comic shops (all my hometown ones had closed in the 90s), and those new stores were teeming with action figures from DC Direct. DCD had started just a few years earlier so I had never before seen the merging of toys and comics in one store like that. I bought a lot of these toys over the next few years. But these Silver Age Deluxe Box Sets were just too pricey for me at the time. I favored Batman over Superman and I preferred costumed heroes over civilians, so it took me twenty years to finally pick up this Lois set. Which is a shame because because this figure is gorgeous. Despite being a bit pre-posed and having sculpted-in accessories, the Tim Bruckner sculpt perfectly captures that Silver Age aesthetic. I know most people love her modern purple blazer, but these vintage browns will always be my favorite. Let's check out Lois below!

Mezco 5 Points - LOIS LANE!

If you have never watched the Fleischer Studios Superman series from 1941-1942, I highly suggest you do. Although people generally refer to this as a television series, they were actually a series of nine 10-minute theatrical shorts (Household televisions wouldn't become common until the mid 50s). There is a stark art deco style similar to Edward Hopper and other realists on the 1940s. The influence of this series can be seen in the works of later animation powerhouses like Hayao Miyazaki and Bruce Timm. And even in the past twelve months we've see three representations of the Fleischer Superman design in the toy aisles. The first of which was this Mezco 5 Points "The Mechanical Monsters" box set which thankfully included Lois Lane. Lois has had a ton of designs over the years. She is a plainclothed character, so no single look was necessarily iconic. But to me, this brown, green, and yellow skirtsuit will always be the best. But I'm always partial to retro aesthetic. DC Direct Silver Age LOIS LANE as SUPERWOMAN!

Classic Silver Age Superman: Series 1 - Lois Lane Superwoman - DC Direct 2006

Following up on yesterday's modern Super Lois figure, here is a fantastic representation of an empowered Lois as she appeared several times in the early 1960s.  DC Direct produced many great Silver and Golden Age figures during its run,  and I think collectors are unfortunately very unlikely to see products like this made again.  I love modern styles by all means, but the classics are just timeless. (Excuse me while I mourn).   This version of Lois was a pleasant surprise for me.  When I heard news of a single-packed wave of SA Superman figures, I assumed any ladies we got would just be redecos of the Deluxe Box Set figures from 5 years prior.  But no, instead we got this amazing piece of Superman history.  Her colors are bright, her hair is exquisitely dated, and her face looks downright mischievous.   Sculptor Karen Palinko did an amazing job capturing that Silver Age style with a lot of personality.  Let's check Lois out in detail below!

DC Direct All-Star SUPER LOIS!

All Star Action Figures: Series 1 - Lois Lane as Superwoman - DC Direct 2008

A common reoccurring story in the world of Superman is that of Lois Lane temporarily gaining superpowers.  I will actually be reviewing another great example of this character twist tomorrow, but today is my favorite of the two.  All Star Superman was a great comic that ran from 2006-2008 with the creative talents of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.  The series attempted to boil-down the Superman character to his essential points over the course of 12 issues.  It was a success and received numerous awards.  Issue three of the series rehashed the classic "Super Lois" story in a fantastically modern way.  In the story, Superman presents Lois with a suit constructed of his own DNA for her birthday.  This gives her 24 hours of superpowers that reads like a fairytale date movie.  I loved the issue, and I loved how DC Direct surprised us 2 years later with this fantastic action figure commemorating the story.  Let's check her out below!
