Star Wars Black Series - DOCTOR APHRA!

Star Wars 6 " Black Series #87 (Comic Universe) - Doctor Aphra - Hasbro 2019

Before I bought this figure and researched her, I knew next to nothing about the character Doctor Aphra. A few years ago I noticed her featured on one of those "action figure variant covers" that Marvel loves to publish and I thought she looked like an interesting character. But upon reading her backstory tonight, I'm now super intrigued. Doctor Aphra was first introduced in the pages of Star Wars: Darth Vader from Marvel Comics in 2015. She was an archaelogist who originally worked for Vader, but eventually ended up running from him. She is an expert in droid and weapons technology and is notable for having the first solo spinoff title featuring a character original to the comics. She has swagger like Han Solo, charisma like Lando Calrissian, she makes a lot of poor decisions, she's essentially a villain (although not as bad as others), and she is the first gay character I can think of in the Star Wars universe. I'm now super excited to read her solo series. Let's check out Doctor Aphra below!

Doctor Aphra comes with her signature aviator cap and goggles and a small blaster.

Her vest is also removable.

Because of her vest, there are parts of her buck that are whittled down to a bare minimum to make room for the  thick plastic clothing. It's really interesting how fragile the exposed shoulder joint looks. I realize all figures have a similar joints (but hidden) and I don't consider them delicate at all.

I like how this comic variant cover finally became a reality.

Time for a Comparison Pic!

Cheers!

  1. Good looking figure. Not one most are familiar with unless they read the comics. I wasn't familiar with her until recently as well. Good post.

    1. Disney-Lucasfilm needs to give Doctor Aphra more exposure thru other media & not just the comics. Perhaps a series on Disney+ could change that? I mean, w/a unique & morally-gray cheeky thief that's a cross between Lara Croft & Cat Woman, the potential for something greater is there. Still, her fan-base is good enough where she got her own figure in both 3 & 3/4 & 6 inch Black Series form - it's a start.

  2. Love the head sculpt. Apparently, quite a number of the parts were reused from Jaina Solo.

    1. I like how they decided on a multi-ethnic face since she's supposed to be half Asian & Caucasian-looking (yeah, I know there's no such thing in SW, but you know what I mean), considering sometimes artists illustrate her too Asian or not Asian enough. Would love it if Disney/Lucasfilm gave Doctor Aphra more multi media exposure.

  3. Smart re-use of the Jaina Solo Torso and legs. Glad both Black series and TVC got excellent figures of this character.

  4. Possibly the best of the original characters of the new SW canon. She needs a lot more exposure than just two figures & appearances in a couple of games. As much as I'm enjoying her comic book series her cross-overs, it just isn't enough. Perhaps a live-action TV series on Disney +?
