Marvel Legends - SPINNERET!

Marvel Legends - Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows - Spinneret - Hasbro 2022

I love that in modern comics, the love interest (civilian) characters often get powers and become superheroes. The trope is extremely common: Lois Lane, Betty Ross, Carol Ferris, Peggy Carter, Jane Foster, Gwen Stacy, etc have all been granted powers (and often solo books and toys). Mary Jane has had her fair representation in costume. She has appeared as some version of Spider-Man many times (usually in alternate timelines). But her role as Spinneret in 2016's Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Vol 2 was special. She suddenly had a unique costume and name, and she was a regular hero character in that ongoing series (albeit in an alternate universe). The series is centered around Spider-Man, Mary Jane, and their daughter, Anna-May (Annie) Parker. Annie has powers (she is presumably an alternate version of Mayday Parker aka MC2 Universe's Spider-Girl) and in volume two of the comic, MJ wants in on the action and gets a tech suit that grants her powers as well... as Spinneret.

I always thought this design was pretty iconic and worthy of a toy, but I'm as surprised as anyone that we actually got it. Although I'm baffled as to why they excluded Annie in her Spiderling costume. They were always a trio and it's weird to see Spinneret without her.

This is the first Marvel Legends pack I have opened since the plastic-free packaging became standard. I am normally extremely picky about paintjobs (especially for Spider-characters with intricate web patterns), but I lucked out and Spinneret and Spider-Man both look great.

Spinneret comes with three sets of hands and an unmasked Mary Jane Watson head. This was the same head that came with Marvel Legends Vintage Gwen Stacy, but it is painted very differently (much better imho).

Here is my best attempt at recreating that iconic Ryan Stegman cover introducing Spinneret and Spiderling (directly above).

Spinneret comes with an updated Spider-Man figure with added articulation. The toe articulation is especially nice.

Both their unmasked heads are extremely well done.

PS - While we're at it.... let's get Hasbro to give us a Mary Jane as Iron Spider. Considering they already have those spider legs sculpted, I would think this would be a super easy figure to produce.

Time for a Comparison Pic!

Cheers!

  1. I'm not familiar with Spinneret but I do like her look. Both heads look good on her as well. Good post. Thanks.
