I think Pythona was the character that first made me realize the desparity between male and female action figures in the 80s. When G.I.Joe the Movie first air on TV (serialized) in 1987, I tuned in and taped it every day that week. The first episode seemed dedicated to this new intriguing character named Pythona. It wasn't long before I saw toys at the local Hills department store dedicated to the movie. There was a 3-Pack of Cobra-La characters, including Golobulus, Nemesis Enforcer, and a Cobra-La Royal Guard. It seemed like a blatant mistake to exclude her considering she received more screen time than any of the others. So, despite my love for all things. Cobra-La, I never got this set. It just seemed like an incomplete roster without Pythona. Like the Fantastic Four without Sue or the Power Rangers without the Pink and Yellow Rangers (both of are common toy exclusions). But who could have guess that 38 years later that Pythona void would be filled so spectacularly. Let's check out this beauty below!
Pythona's only accessory (aside from her cape) is her large pink gem that she uses to bribe Zartan and the Dreadnoks into her allegiances.
"A gem of that size... answers ALL my questions" - Zartan
If you haven't read any of it yet, Pythona is a major supporting character in the current Void Rivals series from Image Comics' Energon Universe. Written by Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead, Invincible). The story also features an obscure/forgotten Transformers character who has been a favorite of mine for decades. Such a good book.
My brother knows my obsession with Pythona and sent me these early Pythona design concepts this Summer from an art book he had just purchased.
Here is a photo of Pythona without her cloak.
Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!
Here are the three offical Pythona toys so far: Super7 ReAction+ (2025), G.I.Joe Classified (2025), and G.I.Joe Collector's Club (2016) (with a replacement cape).
Here is my current take on Cobra-La. Serpentor and "Once a Man" Cobra Commander are honorary members. I can't wait to get Golobulus, Nemesis Enforcer, and maybe even some of the blue-skinned Cobra-La civilians/scientists.
Here is a Pythona with the two other ReAction+ G.I.Joe ladies so far: Jinx and Cover Girl.
And Finally, here she is with her Void Rivals co-stars, Darak and Solila.
Cheers!
