One of the exciting things about the new generation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that was introduced in The Last Ronin storyline was their secondary mutations. The secondary mutations are a side-effect of Michelangelo's DNA being infused into their Mutagen. April utilized the original mutagen and Michelangelo's DNA to ensure the legacy and spirit of the Hamato clan. Unbeknownst to April, Michelangelo had been irradiated when travelling through the radioactive plains of Mongolia after a nuclear fallout - and this affected his DNA. The mutagen in the systems of the four new Turtles is now continuously mutating as a result of this contamination. Therefore, the turtles begin developing secondary mutations at puberty - exhibited as unique powers/abilities (often debuting in times of great stress). The first to exhibit this change was Odyn who turned to stone mid-battle, but soon after Yi exhibits electrokinesis wherein she can emit sparks and generate an electrical barrier to protect her and her family.
I know we've seen this power before, notably with Miles Morales, and the concept of secondary mutation was popularized in X-Treme X-Men and New X-Men in the early 2000s, but something about their application to the TMNT franchise seemed fresh and fun. Since the storyline progressed as the turtles aged (something we never really had with the original Turtles) it was especially interesting to mark a significant transition as they hit their teenage years and began their lives in battle. I really love all the new Turtles collectively as a group. But Yi was always a visual standout with her bold yellow markings. And when I found out she was the technical genius of the team, I was even more smitten. Let's check out Yi below!
Yi's name means One in Chinese.
(All the new Turtle's names mean One in a different language).
Yi's specialty is technology and engineering. Her secondary mutation is the ability to generate an electrical impulse/barrier that effects everything in the immediate vicinity.
Yi comes with all four of the iconic TMNT weapons (Sai, Katana, Nunchucks, and Bo Staff). Each of the four new Turtles is equally trained in all the weapons, so they each come with them all. She also comes with three sets of hands (plus an extra hand holding a small metal instrument, three heads, a bandana, a beanie hat, a screwdriver, and a tool wrap.
Yi has a tech-head with a floating pink visor and an earpiece/antenna. Unfortunately mine is a bit warped and misshapen from the packaging and I was unable to bend it back into place. You can see pics of its intended look on the box photography.
When I saw these figures in the store I realized that they have connecting images on the boxfronts and the side.
Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!
Here is Yi with her younger self that was a pack-in with the Granny April figure.
Here are all the young Turtle accessories together: Uno, Yi, Moja, and Odyn
Cheers!
