Justice League Unlimited - AQUAGIRL!

DC Universe - Justice League Unlimited: Final Figures - Aquagirl - Mattel 2012

There have been many different characters with the name of "Aquagirl" over the years. None of them have stood the test of time however.  My personal theory is that this is due to their costume design.  Rarely have they looked Atlantean or even aquatic in nature. Some are even wearing street clothes under water. The one design that I feel really worked though was this Aquagirl from Batman Beyond, also known as Mareena (the daughter of Aquaman).  She was originally created to be a part of a future Justice League in a 2-part BB story arc, but she has since made appearances in Justice League Unlimited and many comics.  Her costume, hair color, and pointed features give her that otherworldly feel that her previously incarnations lacked.  Aquagirl can breathe underwater, telepathically communicate with sea life, and can control water itself.  In her backstory, we learn that she was kidnapped by Darkseid and trained as one of Granny Goodness' Female Furies.  Cool stuff.  Let's check her out below!

Mattel released several groups of figures in 2012 as the "Final JLU Figures" exclusively on Mattycollector.com.

It's kind of ridiculous that her "bare" feet are actually flesh-colored boots.

Her articulation is limied to the standard 5 points given to all JLU females.  She also sports the same defective feet that they all suffer from.  Mine is standing with the aide of an Infinite Crisis figure stand.

Here are some images of Aquagirl from the Cartoons and Comics.

I always thought Mareena's design was reminiscent of DC's Dolphin character from the 1960s.

Time for a Comparison Pic!

Cheers!

  1. This is one of the few JLU women I do not own...if not the only.

She is an ok figure. Those women had such tiny feet. I don't like using stands unless absolutely necessary. The men didn't stand great either. I had to have a lot of evenly spaced 'load bearing' figures in my JLU display! :D

Last set I bought had Gypsy & she was a pretty awesome figure.

I managed to get them upright for this pic, though I had to use a couple of stands:

    1. That's an amazing collection! I was always very tempted by the JLU line but it was intimidated because the series was well underway by the time I got really into collection superhero toys. (before that I was only collecting GI Joe and Star Wars). I've seen the Gypsy set around but I have no clue who she is. I thought she was an Esmerelda knockoff :)

  2. I agree with Artitix. Gypsy is also my favourite, specially knowing that most likely will be the only representation of her in that outfit. I have most of this figures, only girls, and i have them on top od a painting in the wall as they are impossible to stand without platforms. but the uniformity of their design looks cool with all of them together.

    1. I think I really need to research this Gypsy chick! I have a small collection of JLU ladies and I really like them all. I have Fire, Ice, Huntress, Harley Quinn, Cheetah, Vixen, and Supergirl. I would love to get more but they arent' a high priority for me.

    2. Gypsy, was part of an attempt to make tha Justice League more like the ethnic X-men way back when, so you had hispanic, african american (Vibe and Vixen) and yes, Gypsy. she keeps popping out on DC comics. much like c-listers like Black Orchid, Dolphin, Crinsom Fox, etc. Most JLU figures look quite similar, hence i like Gypsy. She's different from the norm. Plus lets be honest, she'll never get a 6" figure.
