DC Collectibles Jae Lee WONDER WOMAN!

DC Comics Designer Series: Jae Lee - #2 Wonder Woman - DC Collectibles 2015

I rarely buy Wonder Woman figures. I realized long ago that if I were to dive headfirst into collecting Wonder Woman, my collection would easily double or triple in size and I would have an oppressively patriotic looking house. I have reluctantly relegated myself to living vicariously through other people's amazing collections (ExperienceTheWonder is my favorite).  Wonder Woman is easily the most merchandised female superhero of all time... so little gems like this Jae Lee Designer Series version can be easy to overlook.  However I think that would be a great disservice because this is one of the nicest looking figures of Diana I have ever seen.  It's definitely highly stylized, but it's also very classic at the same time.  This is maybe the 5th or 6th Wonder Woman I've been unable to resist adding to my collection, and she is definitely worthy of that exclusive status.  Hopefully she sells well because I would love to see more Jae Lee styled figures.  Let's check out Wonder Woman below!

This figure is gorgeous.  The Jonathan Matthews sculpt is perfection and the color palette and paint apps are impeccable.  I truly wasn't planning on buying this figure, but I just could not pass on her once I saw her in person.

Her super-short skirt is a little cringe-worthy.  But I'll be displaying her from the front so I can overlook it.

Wonder Woman comes with a sword and a cool curved staff.

Seriously, her skirt is embarrassing.  Diana showing buttcheek is so awkward.  If the skirt was a fraction of a centimeter longer, it would be fine.  Risque, but fine.  But as is I think it's just silly.

Here are some images of Jae Lee's Wonder Woman from the comics.
Note that the buttcheek thing isn't nearly so awkward in two dimensions.

Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!

Here she is with the Jae Lee Catwoman.

And here she is with the 2007 Terry Dodson Wonder Woman and the 2009 Justice League of America Boxset Wonder Woman (with the Adam Hughes head and Ed Benes body).

Cheers!

  1. The Jae Lee Wonder Woman figure is the star of that line and probably one of the top three WW figures I've ever seen. It's a truly amazing sculpt.

    1. I completely agree. I really hope there's a second series because I would love to see DCC try to top her. They just announced there would be no NYCC reveals so I'm assuming we won't see anything new until Toy Fair. It's a long wait but hopefully it will be worth it.

  2. I was on the fence about this one. Shame no ankle articulation but I don't mind that much. The sculpt is lovely thou. I have far too many WW figures, but I might get this one.

    1. I'm glad I held off on purchasing too many Dianas in my early days of collecting. This will be the fourth full-sized figure I have on display, with a handful more in storage. I'll probably get all the upcoming movie figures if they look good in the stores, but time will tell. The DCC ones definitely keep getting better and better though.

    1. I just uploaded one! Sorry it took me awhile to schedule another photoshoot. My Septembers are always very busy. I have my She-Ra very intricately placed riding Swiftwind so I didn't want to disturb her, but Adora does the trick. Enjoy!

  4. Hey man, what's up! To be honest, I had to remove your blog on my RSS feed (many others as well) awhile back ago due to the feed being way overcongestion and the extreme scarcity of time allotted to me on a daily basis. For some reason, It seems from time to time again that I'm having to come back to your damn site, so I just decided to add it recently back to the loop. *golf clap*

Anyways, I was really on the fence on the stylistic decisions they made on this figure, and I had much trepidation in shelling any cash for it. But, it seems with your persuasive write-up and wonderful pictures you have definitely convinced me (again) to go for it. Thanks again and good to be back.

    1. Funny you say your blog roll was overwhelming because mine lately is entirely UNDERwhelming. It's like all my favorite bloggers have gone on vacation for 6 months. You're back just in time for a very unpopular week of reviews I'm planning..... girly preschool toys (bwahaha). I'll probabaly start posting them next week.

I think this Wonder woman is a real beauty and it will be really interesting to see her in comparison to the movie versions next year. They seem it have the same color palette. Glad I could convince you to get her.. you won't be sorry!

  6. I'll update you when she arrives in my clammy hands.

Gotta agree with you on her solicitation. I can imagine it getting much worse next year that it could probably surpass the combined amount that's been offered through the years.

You know, I'm still trying to scour for that Ed Benes DC Direct JL Box Set WW that you have. Seriously, it's almost impossible! It's so rarely listed and when they do show up the boxes has ranged between $80-100. I'm sure you got her at a fraction of that cost which makes me rage with envy all the moar.

    2. That Adams Hughes/Ed Benes Wonder Woman was a hit from the moment she was released. Right off the bat she was selling for 30-50 loose. I ended up getting her about a year later for around $25... right at the time they announced a re-release of her in another boxset. I believe this was in the initial solicitation of the DC Origins 2-packs (she had metallic redecos). But in later con displays and solicitations, they switched it back to the original Benes head. For that brief period though where everyone thought she was being re-released, her ebay prices plummeted. I don't like metallic repaints so I still wanted the original luckily. Now I wonder what they did with original All-Stars Hughes body. As far as I know that mold has never been used.

  7. I am seriously considering this figure. I don't like Jae Lee's art style very much but it has worked well in 3D!
I still want that Terry Dodson figure...sigh...costs an absolute fortune these days!

    1. When I see a figure that looks gorgeous, I usually talk myself into buying it even if I don't like the character or designer. The aesthetics of a figure are the number one reason figures are so hard to find on the secondary market. People assume it's rarity, but ugly exclusive figures have nowhere near the demand of a beautiful one that had a wide release. I was not a fan of Wonder Woman when I bought my Dodson figure, but about three years later I backtracked and read that comic series and I was suddenly so glad I made the impulsive buy. That happens to me all the time.
