Marvel Chess Collection - THE SPIDER-LADIES!

Marvel Chess Collection - Anya, Jessica, Cindy, and Gwen - Eaglemoss 2016

I hope Eaglemoss never stops making comic figurines. They started with the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection in 2007 and soon launched their DC Comics equivalent the year after. When both series ran their course, they began making Chess Pieces of the characters and the series continued. I count about 600 unique figures between DC and Marvel, and they're still coming. I thought I was showing great restraint with this line by only buying my favorite-of-favorites. But I just counted and I somehow acquired 37 over the years (including a purchase this afternoon - Hela). One of my greatest Eaglemoss joys came last year when there was a Spider-Man themed Chess series and they released four awesome modern Spider-Woman: Spider-Gwen, Spider-Girl (Anya), Silk, and a modern Jessica Drew Spider-Woman (which I think is the only representation of this look in plastic so far.. not even a Heroclix or Minimate). Eaglemoss has a knack for reading my mind when it comes to character selection. Let's check them out!

Eaglemoss Figurines all come in cardboard and plastic display boxes. I don't like keeping my collectibles wrapped up personally, but I could see myself stacking these in a shadowbox. Each figure also comes with a fantastic magazine which reads like a beautifully illustrated Wikipedia page. I have all my issues and still find myself flipping through them.

Marvel Chess Collection #77
Silk (Cindy Moon)
White Bishop

Marvel Chess Collection #81
Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)

I just love this variant cover of Spider-Gwen #1 with all the Spider-Women on it. Especially Felicity Hardy as the Scarlet Spider, I love that character.

Time for some Group Pics!

Here are the four Marvel Chess Collection ladies together.

And here they are with the two Spider-Women from the Marvel Classic Figurine Collection: #174 Arachne and #61 Jessica Drew Spider-Woman

Cheers!

  1. I'm so tired of them neglecting Julia.

    1. Well, to Eaglemoss's credit, the Chess Collection mostly sticks to modern representation of characters. Last I heard of Julia she was the new Madame Webb in a boring red trenchcoat and glasses. I would honestly probably have skipped that figure (like I did the Spider-Queen figure from this series). But back in the Eaglemoss Classics collection, they did include Julia as Arachne (despite clearly being in her original outfit). I expected Hasbro to show the upcoming "Spider-Woman" in their marvel legends panel last night, but they didn't. It's a 50/50 toss up whether it will be modern Jessica Drew or classic Julia.

    2. I hope it's Julia or even Mattie. Not that Jess's modern look isn't cool, I think the figure we have of her is still pretty awesome

  3. I wish they would make more Silk merchandise of her with her short hair.

    1. I don't think they've made any with short hair so far, right? I kind of like the longer hair personally, but you're right, sh'es had the short hair for almost two years now so it should probably be represented.

  4. Eaglemoss seems to have improved the quality of their pieces substantially since their first run of Marvel figures. All I have from them are Enchantress (which was probably the best female figure out of that entire first series, not to mention the best affordable rendition of her until last year's Legends figure) and Sif. I debated about getting Hela and Valkyrie to have an Asgardian ladies collection, but couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger being that the paints on every example I looked at were shoddy at best. All of these chess pieces look fantastic though, and you can see the difference compared to the two older pieces in the last photo, unfortunately the whole chess piece angle turns me off since I don't play any more.
btw, are these in plastic now, because the last time I checked out the Eaglemoss stuff everything was cast in pewter.

    1. ok, never mind, I read the word "plastic" in your review and it was in reference to the display boxes.

    2. Yes all the Chess piece are plastic. It's kind of a hard brtitle plastic too. My Atomica chess piece took a nosedive and shattered into ten pieces (I glued her though). The chess figures almost always painted in pearlized or metallic colors so they don't really look right with the original series. Also, they are re-released many chess pieces in a slightly larger scale without the chess bases. The Femme Fatales was the first set they did like this. I usually search for Eaglemoss on the Entertainment Earth website to see what's coming out.

Coincidentally I just picked up the Hela eaglemoss for $12. Her paint looks great, but her horns and cape were broken off in the package (hence the price). I already fixed her and she looks great. Enchantress and Big Bard are the highest two on my want list.
