He-Man Animated Series - MO-SQUIT'RA!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (Netflix) -  Mosquitara - Mattel 2022

My favorite thing about Season 2 of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe on Netflix was the introduction of the reimagined villain, Mosquitara. In the 1980's toyline, Mosquitor was a very late addition and never made it into the cartoon. He was a confusing character that always reminded me of the He-Man Woolworths knockoffs that had an MOTU body with some random head that looked like it didn't belong. I know the fandom adores this character, but I always thought the idea of this musclehead running around and stabbing people with his nose to drain their blood was awkward and silly. Flash forward 35 years and this female reimagining of the character has me thrilled. First of all, she has wings, and she's fast. You know.. like a mosquito. But my favorite thing is her voice and sinister demeanor. Her hissing cadence reminds me of Shadow Weaver (but more creepy). The minute I saw her on screen I dreamed she would get a toy, and just a few months later I have her. Let's check out Mosquitara below!

Every time I see her name spelled, it's different.
Sometimes it's just punctuation, sometimes there's an extra "a" included.
Here is a breakdown of what I've noticed so far:
IMDb: Mo'squita-ra
BBTS/EE: Mosquitara
Packaging: Mo-squit'ra
Trademark Registration: MOSQUIT-RA

Mosquitara's only accessory is an energy-effect headpiece that fits over her entire head. It is made of a semi-translucent plastic and is meant to represent the crackling energy that emanates from her proboscis in the show. According to the graphics on the cardback, this is supposed to be a projectile that launches when her spring-loaded torso action feature is flicked. It didn't really work for me.

Mosquitara has a ribcage cut with a forward-motion springing action when pulled back. The range of motion isn't super great, and the action feature limits the poseability. I wish this line would scrap the action features.

One thing you'll notice from the screenshots above is that this figure is missing a lot of paint deco on her head. The nice thing is that the pattern is sculpted on so it would be an easy mod to achieve a screen-accurate look.

Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!

Here are the Netflix He-Man and the Masters of the Universe ladies so far: Evil-Lyn, Ram Ma'am, Mosquitara, and Sorceress.

Cheers!

  1. If you blink right, they have the same feeling of "Zoltar" from Battle of the Planets (who I think is at least PARTIALLY female, if you see the episode they're in disguised as a chick).
