Avengers: Age of Ultron -SCARLET WITCH!

Avengers: Age of Ultron - Basic Figures - Scarlet Witch - Hasbro 2015

I just saw the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie last night.  I was really lazy about getting to the theatres to see it because sequels always disappoint me, and Ultron was never a particularly thrilling villain for me.  Plus I'm a Scarlet Witch fan and the character designs I was seeing for her were just boring.  But after seeing it, I can say I was judging everything too harshly.  The movie was great and Wanda's character was handled really well.  Her non-distinct European accent and crimson power flares will remind you so much of Melisandre from Game of Thrones. Not to mention that the actresses totally look related.  Her powers and origins differed from the comics as I expected, but none of it bothered me.  The Quicksilver discrepancies between this film and Days of Future Past were much more bothersome.  I believe this figure is the first basic wave Marvel female we've seen.  It's amazing that it's Scarlet Witch and not Black Widow or Gamora.  Let's check out this movie version Wanda below!

My figure has an extremely wonky Right leg.  The packaging had it all bent out of shape, but there's no way to tell because the packaging hides her below the knees.  She's made of a pretty flexible plastic, so I did a quick hot water fix, but throughout this shoot it slowly started to bend back to the way it was.  I'll have to redo it.

I think this sculpt looks really good.  For such a cheap figure, it really captures the likeness of the actress.

Wanda comes with some very cool "Hex magic" accessories.
They will totally fit on the wrists of the Marvel Legends Scarlet Witch, but I haven't tried it yet.

These basic figures have only five points of articulation.  Head, Shoulders, and Legs.

Here are some images of Scarlet Witch from the movie.

So I went a little Scarlet Witch crazy today and tried to find examples of all her television appearances.
(Translation: I've been watching cartoons on YouTube all Sunday and taking screengrabs.)
She's had quite a few guest spots over the years so bear with me and my obsessions.

Here is a very classic looking Wanda from the 1966 cartoon series The Marvel Super Heroes.

1994's Iron Man cartoon had an absolutely horrible version of Wanda.  The costume was terrible and her powers made no sense.
She came back in Season 2 with an altered look, but she was still a mess,

Her 1996 appearance in X-Men the Animated Series was thankfully back to a recognizable state.

I like her look in 1999's Avengers: United They Stand.
It's a good mix of classic and modern.  Although in the final two episodes she gets a weird green outfit with a visor that I wish I had never seen.

She went through a transformation from rebellious teen to a formidable goth mutant in 2001's X-Men: Evolution.

From 2009's Superhero Squad show.  As much as a loved these toys, the cartoons annoyed the crap outta me.

And finally from 2009's criminally underrated Wolverine and the X-Men

Time for some Comparison Pics!

Here she is with the Marvel Universe Scarlet Witch.

Cheers!

  1. I was so surprised to see this figure at Toys R Us the other day I almost bought it, even though I don't know much about the character and have no real affection for her and, yes, this is pretty much just an Elizabeth Olson action figure (that said, the toy's design IS movie accurate and that's laudable).

I will probably pick her up at some point, especially if she warms pegs, because I have to support the fact that this action figure exists if nothing else.

    1. I had no idea who Elizabeth Olsen was when I saw the movie... surprised I didn't catch the resemblance. Honestly I thought they hired some eastern European actress... she must have had a very convincing accent. I haven't seen this figure warming the pegs yet so you might've missed your chance. Bummer

  2. In earlier images she didn't look very good, but she isn't too bad for such a small, limited POA figure.

It will be nice to add her to the 'Marvel Movies' shelf!

    1. I had the same thoughts. I never planned on getting her until I saw her in person and realized she wasn't half bad. There will likely be so few movie ladies produced in this scale that she's bound to be a rarity.

  3. I also find the head a decent one to use for a custom Skye/Daisy Johnson from Agents of SHIELD. It's not a perfect likeness, but it does the job.

    1. Good point! I bet a there are a lot of civilian (or uniformed) characters that could be made from her mold.

  4. I knew I had to get her from the moment I knew she was going to be released. Some minor paint jobs on her face and she looks just like Lizzie Olsen

    1. You're absolutely right. I wonder if they do 3-D actor scans on these the way they did with some of the GIJoe movie figures (which ended up looking horrible). But the technology is always improving so it's a possibility.
