3.75" Marvel Legends - CAPTAIN MARVEL!

Marvel Legends 3.75" Series - Wave 1 - Captain Marvel - Hasbro 2016

Marvel is in the middle of a major female-superhero boom. Currently there are solo titles for Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Silk, Wolverine, Thor, Hellcat, Gwenpool, Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel, Mockingbird, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Moon Girl, Angela, and of course Captain Marvel (not to mention the team books A-Force and Spider-Women). One of my absolute favorites is Captain Marvel. Carol Danvers first donned the Ms. Marvel costume in 1977 as a female version of the male Captain Marvel. She changed names and costumes several times over the years: Binary, Warbird, etc. But most recently she went back to her roots and became the New Captain Marvel. I love everything about this new design. It is basically Mar-vell's old costume with the colors inverted and Carol's signature sash around her waist. The new 3.75" Marvel Legends line is off to a good start. Thor and Carol are amazing choices for the first two ladies. Let's check out Captain Marvel below!

The 3.75" Marvel figures have come a long way. The body proportions and facial details are a thousand times better than the early Marvel Universe figures.

I have only two three issues with this figure: (1) Most of these figures I've seen have a casting defect on the chin. My copy is the best I've seen in person. But most have a plastic nub hanging down from her chin, (2) Her neck could be elongated a little bit. From certain angles she looks like she's permanently shrugging. And (3) The gold and red details on her torso seem to be painted too thin. You can kind of see the navy blue paint seeping through in certain areas.  But overall I love this figure.  She's gorgeous.

I'm really interested in what her costume will look like in the 2018 solo movie. Hopefully it looks a lot like this.

Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!

Here she is with her two previous Marvel Universe figures from 2009.

And with Lady Thor.

From Left to Right: Eaglemoss Chess Piece, Mini-Mates, Marvel Legends 3.75", Marvel Legends, Lego, Disney Store Figurine.

Cheers!

  1. I love this figure! The MU line has definitely improved although it has been years since I purchased anything from it. I loved last years Captain Marvel in the 6 inch line, though. That was an awesome figure. Too bad this one doesn't have an alternate head.

    1. Alt head is coming in a comic 2-pack his year I believe with Mar-Vell in his green and white Kree uniform.

If only these new sculpts had torso articulation... alas.

    2. Yes I'm excited for the helmeted version of Carol in that 2-Pack. However, I feel like her neckless look will be accentuated even more on that figure. I guess I'll have to wait and see though. Wrist and torso articulation would be nice, but sometimes too much articulation in this scale can be messy. I'm very happy with this execution overall.

  2. I've never been a fan of the 4 inch line(I refuse to call these Marvel Legends because that's the 6 inch figures and has been since 2005), but these new ones are worse than when they debuted in my opinion. The sculpt is softer, the proportions look weird to me, and the lack of wrist and torso articulation is just unacceptable. This one doesn't look as bad as others in the line, but she looks like she doesn't have a neck. :/

    1. I totally agree with you on not calling these "Marvel Legends" .. in fact I'm still tagging these reviews as "Marvel Universe" because I'm sure the ML label won't stick. I actually think the new female sculpts are vastly improved over the early Marvel Universe figures. The males might be a different story though. The last few Marvel Universe females from 2014-15 were very nice figures. Red She-Hulk, Wasp, and Aurora were all great. But I feel like the girls from 2009-2012 were a mess (including the two early Carols shown above). I felt that their chests were exaggerated (which was especially ridiculous with Kitty), the torso articulation just made them look like they had bad posture, and their legs had no definition (and they were permanently bow-legged). I think the first one with good updated proportions, paint, and sculpt was Jubilee in 2012. But even after that they kept re-using old bodies, like with Mockingbird the following year. I understand the complaints about the missing articulation on these reboot figures, but overall I think they are the nicest 3.75" Marvel females we've seen. I had actually given up on the line for various reasons and skipped Shanna and Emma Frost last year, but Thor and Capt Marvel have reignited the flame in me :)
