DC Collectibles Darwyn Cooke CATWOMAN!

DC Designer Series: Darwyn Cooke - #7 Catwoman - DC Collectibles 2016

This is the figure I have been hoping for ever since DC Collectibles launched their Designer Series back in 2014. Catwoman has been my favorite comic character since I was first exposed to her in the 1966 Batman television series, then further impressions from silver age reprint comics in the 1980s. By 1987, she was modernized into her gray catsuit look which I loved. Unfortunately it was quickly changed into her 1990's purple bodysuit which I loathed. My displeasure with the purple costume wasn't shared though, because it stuck around for eight or nine years and really skyrocketed her popularity. But then in 2001, much to my relief, Darwyn Cooke and Ed Brubaker revamped Selina into the sleek, acrobatic seductress we know and love today (and 15 years later it's still an extremely popular look). It's shocking how well the Jonathan Matthews sculpt captures the feel of Darwyn's art. My Catwoman collection never felt complete without this pivotal design represented. Let's check out Catwoman below!

Yaaaaaasssss.

Selina comes with her signature whip.

Catwoman's articulation is very good, but it is a little more stiff than typical figures these days. Most of the Designer Series figures I've bought so far have T-Crotches and no Ankle articulation like this figure. But for a series specifically meant to represent stylistic 2-dimension illustrations, I'm glad they are preserving the greatest amount of sculpt, even if some articulation gets sacrificed in the process.

Time for soem Group and Comparison Pics!

Here is Catwoman with two other recent Darwyn girls: Harley Quinn and Supergirl.

And two other Designer Series Catwomen: Jae Lee and Greg Capullo.

Cheers!

  1. The sculpting for the catsuit here is perfect, probably the most comic accurate representation of an artist's style since the Jack Kirby New Gods line.

I shouldn't complain, but I wish Matthews and DCC were less restrictive with the variety of facial expressions. We only ever seem to get smiling or dead neutral, which makes no sense for action figures. It looks almost uncharacteristic here given how expressive Selina was during Cooke's run.

    1. I love the New Gods line. I've had the Barda figure sitting out to photograph for a review for over a year but never seem to get around to it.

I understand your desire for more varied facial expressions, but as long as I don't get any more gritted teeth expressions I'm not going to complain. I swear 75% of my collection suffers from bruxism. It is surprising that we didn't get an extra head or something since Supergirl came with both Streaky and Krypto (plus she had a cape, which always adds to engineering costs).

  2. The thing I don't understand is: are the lens locked into place on her head? Why wouldn't they give two versions with the goggles up and the goggles over her eyes? It's not like she didn't regularly have them down.

    1. Yes, the goggles are indeed sculpted on to her head. I always check now since I've now done two catwoman reviews not realizing that they are movable (Hush Catwoman and New52 Catwoman). Maybe they'll release a box set with a different head like they did with the New Frontier Wonder Woman. That might also be a nice chance to release another character like Slam or Wildcat. I can hope.

    2. Great idea with the box set. I would love that!

  3. She's really nice looking. I have Harley in my pile of loot at BBTS but I might go and add Catwoman, too! Great review! I really do like this look for Selina.

    1. It's an awesome figure. I like her best of the three Cooke figures I've bought so far. I'm skipping the wonder woman for budgetary reasons, but she's very nice too.

    2. I've got her waiting in my BBTS POL. Can't wait for her to arrive - along with Wonder Woman. I'm really digging the Cooke sculpts.

  4. Always enjoy your reviews.
I'd love to get a cast of that head.
I think it would look good on the jae lee body
