DC Collectibles Icons - BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE!

DC Collectibles Icons #23 - Batgirl of Burnside (Deluxe) - DC Collectibles 2016

I wasn't sure if I would like the DC Collectibles Icons series when they were first announced back in 2015. I was very worn out on the DC Universe Classics style from Mattel and this new line was touted as a continuation of that scale. It didn't help that the first two female offerings were only so-so. The Harley Quinn is a very nice figure, but the face is more sinister than I like for my Harleys and the Atomica figure was gorgeous, but not a character I obsess over. This Batgirl is the first time I'm realizing the potential of this series.  The Burnside Batgirl redesign is right up there with Spider-Gwen as one of the coolest superhero costumes of the past few years. It embodies all of the classic elements that you expect, but makes it very functional and utilitarian (like the Darwyn Cooke Catwoman design). I know there is an upcoming Mattel version of this same figure which will offer some competition, but for the next few months at least, this Icons Batgirl is the ultimate Babs action figure. Let's check her out below!

Batgirl is a Deluxe figure with a $60 pricetag.
But everything about this set is of such high quality I wouldn't bat my eye at picking up a similar set in the future.

The sculpting by Paul Harding is perfect. Every detail is just right and the paint is flawless.
The hair sculpt on this head makes her look down a little bit, but it's not that extreme.
Note: Adams Ross is also given sculpting credits on the packaging. I believe he worked on the Batcycle and Paul Harding did the figure. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Batgirl comes with a grappling gun, an iPhone, four extra hands, and a head and cape in a "windblown" style for on the motorcycle.

The Batcycle is great. The detail and engineering here is insane. The wheels really turn and the base holds it nicely in place with the soft plastic "splashes" that grip the tires. The splashes also can lean side-to-side to give you variety in how you position the bike.

Okay, things are never truly perfect. There is a design flaw with this figure that I hope gets remedied in future releases. See how the upper thigh pieces seem split and misshapen right above the knees? That is because the knee joint is shaped like a wedge inside so when you bend the knee it spreads the two female ends on either side of the knee apart (causing some splitting). Then when the knee is back in a straight and locked position, the female ends are loose against the kneecap pegs because it was just wedged apart.  She can still stand erect fine, but you can't control the level of knee-bend when you display her in a crouched position.

Time for a Group Pic!

Here she is with an assortment of recent Batgirls. From Left to Right: Mattel DC Superhero Girls, Mattel Batman '66, DCC Icons, DCC New 52, DCC TNBA Batgirl.

Cheers!

  2. I've enjoyed the DC Icons line so far, but I've been on the fence with Batgirl since I prefer a more classic look. The figure is so well done though that I will probably pick her up in a month or two after I've caught up on my Figma preorders.

    1. Yeah I'm really excited about the Icons line now. That upcoming Catwoman looks awesome (despite being my least favorite costume). And I'll probably even try to hunt down a loose Grail this week.
