McFarlane Toys - BATGIRL REBIRTH!

DC Multiverse - Batgirl: Art of the Crime (Batmobile Wave) - McFarlane Toys 2020

Barbara Gordon has had a lot of different incarnations as Batgirl over the years, but thankfully all the costumes have had certain consistent design elements. She almost always has a yellow bat emblem, belt, and sometimes boots. Her outfit is usually purple or blue and gray. The consistency is reassuring. But this new Rebirth design breaks new ground by being the first (in canon) version of Batgirl to swap out her traditional cowl with an Alicia-Silverstone-esque domino mask. I was really resistant to this change when it first appeared (in Batgirl #27 in November 2018), but I must admit the recent comics and this figure have really convinced me of its merits. This figure is a really strong first comic-style figure for McFarlane Toys. The sculpt, articulation, and proportions are near perfection. The only issue is that she has a unique scale at 7" tall. But honestly that just makes me excited to get more figures in this line. Pretty soon we'll be complaining that other companies aren't matching this scale! Let's check out Batgirl below!

Batgirl comes with a gold Batarang, a grappling hook gun, and a figure stand.

Batgirl's articulation is amazing. Here's a run-down: Ball-Jointed Neck; Hinge-and-Swivel Shoulders; Butterfly Shrugs; Bicep Swivels; Double-Jointed Elbows; Hinge-and-Swivel Wrists; Ball-Jointed Ribcage Cut; Ball-Jointed Waist Cut; Hing-and-Swivel Hips; Double-Jointed Knees; Hinge-and-Swivel Ankles; and Toe Hinges. Note that the neck, ribcage, waist, and hips all have a limited range of motion due to her sculpt.

There are couple details of this costume that make me love the design. I was previously lukewarm, but the way that her chest emblem is an extension of her backpack and how her belt makes a bat symbol that continues onto her hips is very cool.

She also comes with a collector card.

This figure is part of a three-figure mini-wave with pieces to build a Collect-to-Build Batmobile.
Batgirl comes with the right side of this first Batmobile.
Todd McFarlane said in an interview that there will be an assortment of Batmobiles over the course of the line.

Another thing that's really made me like this new costume is the awesome variant cover artwork by Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson. Here are the current covers of Batgirl #41-45.

Time for some Group and Comparison Pics!

Here she is with an assortment of recent Batgirls. From Left to Right: DCC Batman vs TMNT Batgirl, DC Essentials Batgirl, McFarlane Batgirl, DC Bombshells Batgirl, and Mattel Burnside Batgirl.

Here she is with the recent McFarlane Harley Quinn.

And by request, here she is with the 2019 DC Essentials Supergirl
Batgirl is noticeably taller, but they still look cool with each other.

Cheers!

  2. I'm largely uninterested in McFarlane's new DC line but I'm definitely down for picking up this Batgirl if I see her. I saw Nightwing and The Batman Who Laughs over the weekend, but no Babs!

    1. Yeah she had a very odd distribution. I ordered mine on amazon because i was afraid I wouldn't see her in stores (and I knew I wouldn't have a lot of hunting time in my schedule when she was due to be released). To this day, I've only seen her in GameStop.

    1. She's a great addition. I can't wait to see who the next comic-based female figure will be. I have a hunch it will be Catwoman.

  4. I’m feeling this is the best Batgirl figure ever. I, too, wasn’t initially thrilled with the character’s most recent redesign (change can be challenging), but within seconds of opening the box this figure won me over big time.

[Oh, and the Batman and Nightwing figures are awesome as well, imo.]

    1. I feel the same way. The toy totally sold me on the design. Since then I've read a few of the comics featuring this look and I'm really digging the change.

  7. I love this figure. its incredible. But too big for Batgirl. Batgirl is a medium girl. No specially tall as Starfire, Big Barda, Wonder Woman, Fire, Poison Ivy, Black Cat, Grace Choi or others tall girls.
I hope Mcfarlane do next medium girls smaller.
Nighwing is a little tall too.
Batman who law is smaller than Batman (wrong).
